I love every holiday. But Halloween is one of my faves. I think it has to do with it being in the fall and that fall being my favorite time of the year. Since I love all the holidays I believe that everyone should have a quilt for every holiday. You can even have more than one if you love them as much as I do.
Today I am sharing with you the tutorial to make this super spooky Halloween quilt featuring Halloween Magic by Riley Blake. Lets get started!
What You Need: (Finished size 57″x68″) measurements based on 44″ wide fabric
1/8 yard of 18 prints & 1/4 yard of 2 prints (or 10 fat quarters)
2 yards background
1 1/4 yard border
5/8 binding
4 yards backing
1 7/8 batting (90″ wide)
#1 We are going to make a total of 20 blocks with 2 of them being different than the rest. For the first 18 blocks you need to cut 4 squares at 3.5″ and 4 squares at 4.5″ from each of your prints. (**if using fat quarters do this twice). From the background you will cut 18 squares at 6.5″ and 72 squares at 4.5″.
#2 Take all of your print squares that you cut to 4.5″ and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner down the center.
#3 Pair one background 4.5″ with one print 4.5″ square. Sew down each side of your line with a 1.4″ seam allowance.
#4 When you have sewn them all together cut them in half using either your scissors or a rotary cutter.
#4 Using your fave squaring up method trim your blocks to 3.5″.
You will have A LOT of trimming to do.
#5 Press them flat towards the darker fabric. My background is black so I pressed to the black.
#6 Time to put our blocks together. The middle is your 6.5″ square that you cut from your background. The corners are the 3.5″ square we cut from the prints. Lay your half square triangles out as pictured. You can do all the prints the same in the block or you can do a scrappy look. I have both ways shown here.
#7 Sew all the half squares triangles together. You should have 4 for each block or a total of 72. Press them block.
#8 Sew a half square triangle unit to 2 opposing sides of the 6.5″ block. Press to the center square.
#8 Sew the 3.5″ squares to the sides of the other 2 half square triangle unit. Press towards the 3.5″ square. You should have 2 of these unit for each block for a total of 36.
#9 Sew one unit from step 8 to the last 2 sides of the blocks. The seams should lock up if pressed correctly.
To make the 2 blocks with the prints as the center cut 2 squares at 6.5″ and 4 squares at 4.5″ for the star. For the outside corners and points cut 4 squares 4.5″ and 4 squares at 3.5″. Put them together following the same steps as above. This is totally optional. You can make all your blocks the same if you chose.
#10 Lay your blocks out in the order you want them. It is 4 blocks across by 5 blocks down. Sew your blocks into rows and then attach your rows.
#11 Cut 8 border strips 5″x WOF and sew together short end to short end. Measure the length of your quilt through the center and cut 2 strips. Sew to the sides. Repeat with the top and bottom.
#12 Quilt your quilt and bind. I love to use bias binding and have a quick tutorial on a fast and easy way to make bias binding.
I love this quilt so much. And I have plans to make matching throw pillows. Watch for the tutorial next month.
